Pillars of hope - Portraits of hope

Showcasing over 50 images captured during a visit of UNICEF projects in Mozambique and Malawi during the spring of 2008, the exhibition documents the daily life of families affected by AIDS.

Michel Medinger’s photographs tell the reality of these two countries and bear witness to the devastating effect of AIDS on children, while also highlighting the initiatives taken in the fight against the disease. They also reveal the sense of solidarity and perseverance that permeates the local communities.

AIDS unquestionably remains one of the most serious health crises in the world. According to UNICEF, the children affected by this terrible disease are the “hidden face” of AIDS. Often ignored by national or international policies in the fight against HIV/AIDS, they receive no basic care and have no access to education, health care or the most basic provisions.

The exhibition was created in the context of the campaign “Unite for children, unite against AIDS” aiming to change the living conditions of children affected by Aids and to respond to the lack of attention given to the needs of children in the context of this pandemic.

Thanks to the support of the Directorate for Development Cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Immigration as well as the Banque et Caisse d'Epargne de l'Etat, general admission to the exhibition is free. It is held at the Cultural Centre of Clervaux Castle, in the context of the cultural programme “Clervaux - cité de l'image”.

Prints of all the photographs on display will be available for purchase with half the proceeds going to projects supported by UNICEF Luxembourg.
