In her work “Watercolours” and “New Colour Works”, Australian photographer Narelle Autio captures the intense and complex relationship between Australian people and the ocean. The Australian continent is known for its emotional ties to the water. Narelle Autio’s artistic motivation lies in translating these strong emotions into images.
The photographs feature vivid and contrasting colours. The chromatic effects reflect the conflicting fascination that man harbours for the sea. On the one hand, the water lures the human body by doing away with the laws of gravity. Figures float in the liquid water, which blurs silhouettes and blends matters. On the other hand, these works also reveal a dramatic dimension. The distortion of bodily proportions under the surface of the water evokes the idea of imminent danger, hidden in the depths of the ocean.
Narelle Autio lives and works in Sydney. She is a founding member of photography agency “Oculi”. In Europe, she is represented by Agence VU in Paris.
