Jungle d'asphalte
Pia Elizondo's images reflect the relationship between man and animal. In an urban environment, the animal is domesticated. It may have succeeded in retaining its wild nature, but in exchange it has lost its freedom. The images captured in Mexico City's zoo illustrate the unwonted view man has of animals. The human confrontation with the "wild" animal is based on a subconscious fascination. At the same time, man is anxious to manifest his dominance. The vignetting of the images reflects the narrowness of the animals' enclosures, designed and signed off by man, and highlights a voyeuristic perspective. Man demonstrates his superiority by drawing a line, both optically and in reality.
