Lee Miller (Kate Winslet) doesn't want to be remembered only as a model and former muse of avant-garde photographer Man Ray (Sean Duggan). Determined to go her own way, she follows her partner, art dealer Roland Penrose (Alexander Skarsgård), to London. As the Nazis invaded Europe, she began working for the British magazine Vogue as a fashion photographer - but she soon realised that here too, men set the tone and women were confined to their roles.

Miller wanted more: she insisted on going to the front as a war photographer. With the support of editor-in-chief Audrey Withers (Andrea Riseborough), she applies for accreditation, but is turned down - solely because of her gender. It was the US Army that gave her a chance. But the road to the front is a dangerous one, and Miller has to battle not only the horrors of war, but also the prejudices that constantly accompany it.

The film highlights the life and work of the exceptional photographer Lee Miller. Some of her work can be seen in the world-renowned exhibition The Family of Man at Clervaux.
