Luisa Maria Stagno has always been fascinated by the animal world – whether wild or domesticated, animals have been with her and shaped her since she was a child. Today, this passion is the focus of her work, in which she captures the beauty and diversity of animals through the lens of her camera. But one project in particular has changed her view of the animal world: her engagement with an often overlooked and undervalued animal – the urban pigeon.
It all started in May 2019, when the photographer was assigned to photograph animals at a wildlife centre. While she initially had little enthusiasm for pigeons, that day proved to be a turning point. Among the animals on display, a breed of pigeon that had once been found abandoned on the side of the road stood out. Its bright white plumage, elegant long feathers and unmistakable crest made a lasting impression. This encounter not only changed her perception of pigeons, but also inspired her to an ambitious project.
With her photography project ‘COUPABLE?’, she takes the viewer on a journey through the world of urban pigeons. Once revered for their social and economic contributions, pigeons are now often viewed with prejudice and considered a nuisance. Yet these intelligent and adaptable animals tell stories about the influence of humans on nature and the development of urban life.
Luisa Maria Stagno has made it her mission to capture these stories. With her camera, she literally gets on the same level as the animals to capture their everyday lives in urban areas. Her images open up a new perspective and show the often overlooked beauty and importance of urban pigeons.
The project not only shows impressive close-ups, but also raises important questions: How has our relationship with these animals developed and what significance do they still have today? Be inspired by a new look at these remarkable animals and experience how photography opens the door to a deeper understanding of our urban fellow creatures.
